Feeling the Birthday Love

I am exactly one month into celebrating turning a year older.

This year I actually spent it with my mother, a first since I was about 19 due to work commitments and my other half being away again. She pulled out all the stops; balloons, a birthday breakfast and a banner that she had recycled from 21st – Mum's always know how to make you feel better about these things!

21st, Birthday Banner

I can imagine for many reading this that this story strikes a chord. It is the unfortunate reality that we LDR’s and military other halves live in. Anniversaries, births, deaths and birthdays are often spent away from our significant others. Whilst there are many everyday moments that occur where you wish you were sharing them with your other half, I think the pivotal ones are where you notice it most.

Mum’s effort is a classic example of where others rally round you to try to make it feel normal and you feel special. I think this is something that military community do really well, (no surprise that my mum has that background really), playing the role of an extended family to not let these moment go un-celebrated or missed.

Luckily, for me I only had to wait to the weekend to see his royal highness. What is nice I find, is there tends to be more of an effort to go that extra mile when you haven’t spent a significant moment with each other. They (or you) do their utmost to make it super special – probably driven by guilt lets be honest – but it does feel nice. Whilst there weren’t any shiny shoes with a patent red sole in sight (a girl can continue to dream) he had planned an amazing evening.

He had brought us tickets to go and see Paloma Faith, my favourite singer and someone who means a lot to us both as our wedding song was “Just Be” - an absolute tune that you have to listen to, the words are hilariously honest! He had also booked a hotel in town so we didn’t have to worry about getting home and arranged for dinner and cocktails. All my favourite things!

The boy did good!

We had a fab time and whilst we weren’t a million miles from home, waking up in a hotel room made it feel like we could have been a million miles away. All wrapped up in our little bubble.
